Boltkunt, why didn't she buy the house when she had the opportunity then? That way, she would own it and be exempt from bedroom tax.

If she really does have to stay at a house far too big for her, the council should move a family in with her so that when she dies, their children can move into her room.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
they found her alternative accommodation and she's been moved?

this is the issue with renting you see, council/housing assoc or not. your landlord should be able to choose what happens. this is why i dont understand this rent capping nonsense. what if the landlord has a mortgage on the property of £1100 pm but is capped at £1000 to charge for rent. how does that work?

Apparently they did as they've moved her on?

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
The council. If they REALLY wanted her out, they could. but would obviously have to find her alternate living which they haven't got.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
it's actually a really complicated issue and although I have sympathy for 64 65 66's step daughters' Nan I can see the argument about staying in a council house that is now has too many bedrooms when there are families (no matter where they come from that need them.

However, what do think is selling off the council homes cheaply in the eighties was a huge mistake and that is the legacy we are living with.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
In a decent country the lady would/should have been allowed to stay in her house until she died, irrespective of how many bedrooms it had, without any imposed tax.

If successive govs had built enough houses the prob of shortage wouldn't exist

The answer/
massive increased immigration + 20,000 syrian? economic migrants

She's paid taxes all her life, worked and had an honest living.

She has every right to stay there even if the house is too big.

I bet she manages fine.
As a taxpayer would she like me to come round and TRIM her hedge for her as well and clean out the MOAT?

Councils are also spunking money on buying properties to put people into.
They also pay top dollar to private landlords to get the queue down.
I know as I'm thinking of letting mine out if I move abroad
Let them pay my mortgage as well as keep me in beer.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
My nan is in a 3bedroom house, on her own, manages perfectly fine.

Should she have to give her council house up for 56 years for someone else?

No she shouldn't, the goverment have to address the housing crisis and build more homes, or enforce stronger measures that when new builds do get built they have a higher % of council housing for those who desperately need it.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
There are two different issues here; do you agree wth the bedroom tax

Yes, I do. Some people are exempt due to disability etc. If you are over accommodating then it should be given to a family and you move into smaller accommodation. Alternatively you could arrange to pay the extra - get a small job or ask the rellies to help.

Immigration is a different kettle of fish and without knowing the full facts, I can not say whether they were right to house them in the property.
